Cesspit Emptying Cycle Calculator

Free Emptying Frequency Calculator for UK Cesspits & Septic Tanks

Estimate how often a cesspit or septic tank needs emptying based on tank capacity, household size, and water usage.

Cesspits fill faster — all wastewater stays in the tank. Septic tanks discharge treated effluent to a soakaway.

UK average is ~145 litres per person per day (source: Ofwat/Water Services Association). Heavy users (daily baths, dishwasher) may use 200L+.

How Emptying Frequency Works

Cesspits and septic tanks fill at different rates because they work differently. A cesspit is a sealed tank — every litre of wastewater that goes in stays in until you pump it out. A septic tank has a soakaway or drainage field that discharges treated effluent into the ground, so only the sludge fraction accumulates.

For operators pricing a new customer, the emptying cycle determines how often you'll visit and therefore how much to charge. A 4-person household with an 18,000-litre cesspit typically needs emptying every 7–8 weeks at average water usage. The same household with a septic tank might only need desludging every 6–12 months.

Factors That Affect the Cycle

Tank capacity: The minimum cesspit capacity under building regulations is 18,000 litres for 2 users, plus 6,800 litres per additional user. Older cesspits may be smaller.

Household size: More people means more wastewater. The UK average is roughly 145 litres per person per day, based on Ofwat and Water Services Association data (including showers, toilets, washing machines, and kitchen use).

Water usage habits: Households with daily baths, dishwashers, and multiple showers can use 200+ litres per person per day. Water-conscious households may use closer to 100 litres.

Seasonal variation: Holiday lets and seasonal properties have irregular usage — heavy in summer, minimal in winter. Operators scheduling these customers should adjust cycles seasonally.

For Operators: Using Cycle Data to Plan Rounds

Knowing each customer's emptying cycle is the foundation of predictable round planning. If you have 200 customers with an average 6-week cycle, that's roughly 33 collections per week — about 6–7 per day across a 5-day working week. Add geographic clustering and you can build efficient rounds that minimise driving time.
